History

But a number of reasons can be pinpointed to why Champo is so good
Even though it was a game that started on the Amiga of all things.
And so I'll go through a little History.

Beginning and CM1

CM2 97/98 and Sports Interactive

The Beginning and CM1

The Collyer brothers loved playing football games on their computers and had an interest in programming. They thought that they could do better than the current bunch of games and decided to make their own. They had hoped to make the source into a magazine for others to play. Their friends thought it was really good and told them to send it to publishing companies. Only one showed any interest and that was Domark. The rest thought it was too basic and didn't have a good look. Domark also wanted to improve the look so they got programmers in to translate the Code from BASIC to C and improve the look of the game. It was released for the Amiga and PC but didn't have any real players and wasn't very popular.

Then came the 92/93 season and this is when the CM series really started to shine. The game had a few bits improved and added in real players. The game was more realistic and easy to play and kept you stuck in front of a computer screen for hours. I can remember those days, the fights between me and my brother for who got to play CM that day. Many times we lost track of time and ended up going to bed at 5 in the morning.

There was an add-on pack released under Windows and Dos and I think it was available for the Amiga. Like the later versions of CM2 it had a few tweaks making gameplay better and harder and it also had the player data, team data all updated. There was an Italian league version of CM1 also released but the English one was the most popular. According to an Amiga magazine CM1 solf 350,000 copies for the Amiga which is a huge amount.

CM2

1995 came around and out came the eagerly awaited Championship Manager 2. The mother of all games. The GOD of games. Every magazine reviewer loved it. Every magazine gave it over 90% or 9 out of 10. It was full of bugs but brilliant. The new interface was great, stadium pictures for every English team, loads and loads of players and stats and stats and stats and more stats and pathethic commentary from Clive Tyldesley. Some comments used to describe Cm2 by magazines were
"Thank you God for bringing me Championship Manager 2"
"More addictive than crack"
"More addictive than Belgian Choccies"
"PC ZONE Classic"
"PC Review Recommened"
The game stayed in the UK and Ireland Game charts for months and months and popularity grew. Foreign Leagues were released and these included the Italian, French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Belgian and the Scandinavian Leagues. These were great but for those in the UK the thrill of managing the English or Scottish League was greater. Other countries most likely found it best playing their national league as well. There were plans for an Amiga version of CM2 but as far as I know this never came about. Oliver Collyer had by this time learned C++ and was the main programmer in making this game the best. Paul Collyer was doing something else at the time of making CM2. A free patch for the 95/96 version was released through the internet to fix some of the bugs and update the rules and many people downloaded this for free.

In 1996, with such a great popularity for the patch another patch was released to begin the start of the 1996/97 season through the company Eidos who had taken over Domark. This patch cost money but it was worth the £10 for the update or £30 for the full thing. This version while basically the same game just had a much better feel about it when playing. Maybe because I'd a faster computer but I don't think so. The gameplay was tweaked another bit and the game was made harder and better. It was of course completely updated and had lots of bugs fixed. This game stayed in the UK and Ireland top 10 charts for at least 10 months until people heard about Championship Manager 2 Enhanced.

CM2 97/98 and Sports Interactive

At the beginning of 1997 Sports Interactive Ltd was formed by Oliver and Paul Collyer. Their first employee was Mark Woodger ( the person that deals with the many e-mails sent to them ). Paul became active in the making of CM2 for the first time as they started to make CM2 Enhanced (as it was called then). CM3 was in the making, but the brothers and Mark thought it would be good to have a great finish to the CM2 series and so decided to make CM2 Enhanced. It was going to let players play 3 leagues at the same time and add on loads of new features. After delay and delay CM2 Enhanced was released under Eidos under the Name CM Season 97/98 with 9 Leagues all together and new features as promised. This game made CM even more popular and it was the UKs biggest selling PC game of 1997. Selling 200,000 copies in the UK alone in the few months it was released in 1997. It has been in the UK top 10 charts ever since then until the end of October when it dropped out. I'm writing this in October so it may still come back into the charts before the end of 1998. In 1997 and 98 Sports Interactive also employed 3 others. Marc Vaughan, PJ Norman and Kev Turner. All of these people have been busy working on CM3.

CM3

CM3 has been a long time in the making and should be released by the end of January 1999. It is very eagerly awaited by many around the world and has been delayed constantly. It was originally planned for July 1998. Then August. Then September. Then late November or early December and now late January 1999. People are getting impatient but I say for them to take the time they have and make CM3 absolutely brilliant. CM2 97/98 should be enough for people to do in the last few months of the year.

I'll finish this history with saying that this will be updated as new historical things happen and finish saying these words.
