Championship Manager needs a good aproach to the game.
Knowing your own players is the first thing to do
Examine every player in your team. Make sure you know each weakness and strength
Choose your own formation for each separate match.
E.g. Against Milan play defensivly and use Long Ball
Uses of Direct , Long and Pass
My favourite style of play is Direct Style as it has many functions.
1. It gets the ball up the field quickly.
2. With good defenders it is very good at accuracy.
3. It amounts to many chances in games.
4. It is a good style of play for counter attacking.
It is best to use Direct with a formation like 5-3-2 attacking.
Disadvantages
1. If defenders are all in the box they will get the ball.
2. Players will all run forward and creates gaps for oppositon counters
Long Ball.
This should be used against a team playing all out attack
For these reasons
1. It gets the ball quickly up the field and so prevents attacks
2. When team is all out attack , a counter attack is easy with Long Ball
3. There will not be many men in the opposing penalty box so bogging it forward creates chances.
Passing
Should be used against a defensive team
As
1. They will not have many forward so slim chance of counter.
2. Their defence will be all over Long and Direct balls so passing should break them down.
3. It is an exciting way of playing.
Should only be used with a team of good passers or you will be easily dispossessed.
More Tips
Spend a long time in the transfer market in pre-season.
There will be bargains and brilliant young players to be found.
By accident I found the yound shearer and he has scored 40 in a season
Especially at the start of the game search the transfer market for about 2 hours
New players are always needed
USE YOUR SHORTLIST
It is a great facility to keep your eye an players who are unavailable
Ignore your scouts.
You are a better scout than they are and the players they recommend
are not usually young and only well established players
who will cost you loads.
With the vast load of players you might even spend even more than 2 hours
And it will all be worth it when you find the New Maldini

CHEATS
Warning, these will harm your CM playing days.
1. Pressing Shift-8 or the "*" key will exit the game without saving. This can be used if you
lose against Man.Utd. and want to have another go. :-)
2. To buy a player from another team who won't let him go, add a manager and become that teams manager. Then sell the player
to the team you want and after that retire as manager.
3. To become an international manager without having to go through the normal way, add more managers
and select the international team. Enter your name as the current manager's name. You can find the manager's name by going
to the team in Squad Details and looking up General Information.
4. If you are with a low division team and your best player has a big club release clause and he wants to leave, list him
for loan. Then refuse all offers you get for him and eventually he will decide to stay. If you are going to cheat you might
as well put all your good players with that clause on loan at the start :)
5. In CM2 95/96 or 96/97 you can get players for free. Offer an irresistable offer to the club, that they immediately accept.
Then go to adjust offer on the same day and bring it down to FREE. Click on CANCEL not MAKE OFFER. They club already accepted
the offer and you will get the player for free as long as he wants to sign. Does NOT work in Enhanced (97/98)
